Zurich

The decision was made to stay at Hotel de Marc in Zurich, a 'Uni. mate of Gavs' if we could get hold of him on the mixture of numbers that we had available. After several unsuccessful attempted numbers we eventually found someone answering, unfortunately it was not Marc but by some miracle we had actually got the right company. After a brief chat Marc agreed that we could crash at his (big thanks Marc I owe you more than a couple now!).

Both of us were feeling devastated and were more than happy to drink anything and do anything that was suggested. Stevie Cryan (another uni mate 'lodging' with Marc) who I had not seen for years again proved his worth of being a great entertainer and a great laugh (thanks stevie it was great to slip straight back into the old routine – mad nights, mad fun and all that was missing was a dodgy house and 'Minty'- cheers Steve). A cracking night was had by all, which started at local bars and continued all night at Marcs apartment.

We were awoken after a few hours sleep by Jenny a girl I vaguely remembered showing us a very interesting trick she had perfected involving a bottle of Grolsch and her chest (impressive mate!). She was evidently full of energy and doing her best to shift us both by jumping on our heads simultaneously. Gav who surprisingly failed to shift had a cactus inserted down the back of his pants (complete with complimentary soil) this was followed by pistachio nut shells which Steve and Gav had been 'munching' on several hours earlier. Eventually Gav moved into his usual graceful morning routine that went something along the lines of …….. what have I done to deserve that closely followed by the inevitable question for Dan 'have you seen my contact lenses case?' .

The morning was quite successful as we were handed a cold beer at eleven o'clock. From then on things shifted up a gear when we all piled into the local (ish) legal herbalist, the previously unknown but important fact about Switzerland suddenly dawned on us, after purchasing a small field of greenery for twenty quid. Then followed much smoking with Gav as bucket master in Jenny's Penthouse. At this point other players should be mentioned Aussie Mike a stereo typical nice guy Aussie bloke, Jenny's sister who Gav vaguely remembers hugging in his sleep the previous night (she did move bless her) and who was only there for a quiet weekend with her sis!! The day continued with limited conversation and plenty of telly 'glazing', this activity was punctuated by the odd question from Gav of 'whos next up then….' And Marc of 'where's that pizza', too which Jenny would jump up and realise that either the oven was not actually on or the pizza was somewhat over done.

Later that evening we entered the real world of pubs, where we probably looked like space aliens, everyone apparently mute and transfixed by the interesting wallpaper patterns.

After what seemed like the weekend from heaven we headed back to our task of a simple overland trip to South Africa.

Once again Cheers Marc, Stevie and Jenny and all your friends for a great time!
