I really don’t know how all of this came about it was not as if I feel that one-day I woke up and said, "I know what I want to do...." It just never happened like that. It must have started when I visited Africa just after I left university. Don’t get me wrong I am not an academic by any stretch of the imagination, Uni. was a blast and an experience that I never want (or am likely) to forget. So back to Africa, imagine being transported from PC UK to South Africa for the summer of 1992 the Spring boks had just won the rugby world cup and the whole country on the outside seemed to be on the ultimate high, but Africa is never as it seems!
I spent three and a half months working and travelling round one of the most beautiful countries I have ever seen from the top of Table mountain down to the tropics of Durban and the ultimate African experience the Kruger National Park and all the wildlife that you could ever wish to envisage. Some of the best memories of my life when I think about them are from Africa whether it be standing staring at the majesty of Abu Simbal in the fading light of day watching as the huge statues are illuminated by more modern but equally as awe-inspiring modern lighting, to standing on Table mountain watching as the cloud miraculously opened up and the lowlands below revealed themselves blazed in colour. So that is that, this is why this trip has driven my life for so long. I know its not going to be easy but what ever is? So here’s the plan then (as I sit here in the Lake District thinking to myself I must be mad) England, France, Italy, Greece, Turkey, Syria, Jordan, Egypt, Sudan, Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, Mozambique, South Africa. If you can, stand the boredom hold on, cause this is going to be one hell of a ride! |
