The End...

We found ourselves driving towards Darling simply because it was a great sounding name for a town and for me it rhymes with Carling, all of a sudden wal stops Landy 2 and ambles back towards me and Landy 1, beckons me out onto the dirt track and stares into the distance. I have to admit at this point I was thinking “he's finally lost it altogether” but no, I realise what he is staring at after a few seconds. Even from 40 kms away Table mountain looked great! We had (almost) made it.

True to form, 5 kms down the road Landy cuts his engine and I am left thinking what I had done so much harm to in a past life. A simple fix this time (stop solenoid wire) and we were on our way again. We actually ended up at a bar at bloburgstrand where we decided to stop for a drink to celebrate our surely imminent success, (Sven even went as far as ordering Champagne!) it was not to long before we attracted attention from the locals who also wished us well and seemed genuinely surprised that we had made it intact. Our saviour arrived in the form of a brain surgeon (neuro surgeon actually) whom Wal had met in Turkey who had agreed to put us all up for our stay in Cape Town. A big thank you here to Arnoud and his wife Antoinette (who are mentioned in more detail later in the web site) Thank you for your superb hospitality, cooking and knowledge of Asterix!

I was surprised to make it on time to meet Scally at the airport and was even more surprised when he actually appeared through the exit doors (he did however look slightly dishevelled for Scally) it was great to see him (I always knew he would honour his word of a drunken night a year earlier).

So all that was left after Wals brother arrived the next day was to drive to Cape Point and officially end the trip. So after 32000km (35000km for Wal), one bad crash, one blown engine, two bad hangovers and a hell of a lot of stress we were heading to the end. Simple to do, its only 140kms from Cape Town, but oh no 21kms from the point the team is split up somehow in a scurry for money from the Belgians and a dash for food from the English. Fortunately enough we met up again to cross into the Cape of Good Hope car park side by side. We had made it!

I cant describe my emotions so I will not try. Needless to say, for me I had realised a dream and made some great friends (nearly lost, and lost a great friend) along the way so as you can appreciate my thoughts belong to me. I have to now create another dream and another target South America 2004-5 ? I risked a lot for this trip and I have lost a whole lot more! Was it worth it ……………………. Take me out for a drink sometime and I will tell you.

Thanks all for watching. Look for further updates in the future.
