Greece 1

After the 13th attempt at sorting out the landy we made a last minute dash to the port in Bari. Arriving literally one minute before the last departure to patras a brave ferry worker through himself infront of us as we were trying to board. We were told that the ferry was full and so waited for the only other option which was to Igunamestu. The bargain ticket was definitely reflected in the 5 star service and general ambience of exactly what you would expect from a greek ferry. The ferry itself was full of Turkish lorry drivers and a few people who resembled refugees (us three).

In the morning we docked only 4 hours behind schedule. After some fantastic manoeuvring by Gav we drove down the coast and, at last, felt relaxed (nearly as if we were on holiday). In less than an hour we stumbled on a beautiful line of beaches and a somewhat deserted campsite in a place called Lichinos. Fifteen seconds later we were in the sea behaving like three year olds and loving every minute of it. Continuing this holiday buzz we started the next round of the water ball championships, a sport invented by Mike and developed with the help (and boredom) of Dan during their previous imprisonment and isolation in Italy. We are confident that the sport will take off world wide and will soon be leading England into the final only to be beaten by the Germans on a dodgy penalty shoot out.

At last we got down to some serious camping and started to munch our way through the food supplies that should have been eaten the previous month. Dan was more than happy to oblige and this target has now taken presidency over the main goal of getting to Africa. That night we made a serious investment into the local wine trade with some interesting results, the end of which was three white bottoms seen racing down the beach for a romantic moonlight swim. Apologies to all the local fisherman and fellow campers who witnessed this horrific sight. The next couple of days was spent relaxing and perfecting our diving and swimming skills. Dans doggy paddle has improved a little too!!

And so onto Athens the drive was much longer than we anticipated and somehow we had missed that we needed to get a ferry!! Arriving at Athens airport the first person Dan sees is David Beckam and the second is Dennis Irwin pretty impressive I think but Dan just shrugs. Mike is packed off back to blighty and once again we are alone with our moving double bed (Thanks Donny!!!).

We camp rough for the night next to a super market in the suburbs of Athens only to wake the next morning to find that in actual fact we were on the equivalent of the M1. Dan's first mission of the day was to find a pristine toilet block complete with gold fittings. Into Athens we eventually find the Olympic stadium, Yasser Arafat is there and we, as two scruffy looking Brits with bags getting within shooting range of were the great man was before eventually a security guard come over and asked what we were doing (we had strolled past about sixty!!!). After meandering around the stadium admiring the piles of rubbish, fake statues and Gypsy camps, we realise that in actual fact we are at the wrong stadium!! And head into the melee of traffic once more to find the other olympic stadium! (as it says in the guide book that we read later ……..' the olympic stadium is not to be confused with the other olympic stadium').

Meeting up with friends in Athens proved to be relatively easy as Simon and Debbie found us and took us back to there apartment were we were lavished with food and importantly cold beer! We are actually here to pick up some documents that are being sent from England (thanks mum and dad).

The next morning the documents have not arrived and we make a decision to head off south and see a bit more of Greece. Arranging to meet back up with Debbie and Simon on Monday.

Big thank you to Debbie and Simon for putting us up and putting up with us!!
